Considering our course focus on relationships and the previous readings, this type of parental relationship is very different. Micheal is very dependent on his mother to live, but he also resents his mother sometimes. He just wants someone to talk to other than his mom. It’s not like he can live without her, which makes it hard for him to kick her out. He wants to be independent but physically can’t and it turns into a love/hate relationship. Any normal mother-son relationship would be easy, the son would leave the nest as soon as he is independent enough, but this one never can. If he truly wanted to be independent, he’d have to find someone else to take care of him. He loses his original caretaker, and loses the relationship with his mom. He’d have to sacrifice many things to become truly independent. This relationship argues the tough motherly love overcomes wanting to be independent to live his own life.
Escape can mean many things. It could mean to get away from someone or something, or get out of the current situation he is in. In Micheal’s perspective, his definition of escape is to get away from the care of his mom and become independent. His escape is freedom of his own, to live his life in his own way. In the mother’s view, escape is letting his son go, and going on vacation for a while. Her escape is taking time for herself instead of worrying about her son during all hours of the day. Micheal’s motivation for escape is his girlfriend, he just wants to have a life with her. He is motivated to become his own person. He aspires for his independence. His mother’s motivation for escape is wanting the best for her son. She just wants him to be happy but it is hard for her to let him go. I believe the one who has the most power is Micheal. The mother has done anything and everything she could possibly do for her son, now it is just time to let him go. Micheal should know that it is now his own life and shouldn’t feel like he is tethered to his mother. He controls what he wants and eventually will get it on his own.
